![]() ![]() All of the loops have both interior and exterior sites. It’s organized in a number of horseshoe shaped lettered loops that run north to south along the island. ![]() Electric hookups are available in one loop only. The state park offers beach-front camping with no water or sewer hook ups. It’s north of Assateague Island National Seashore and Chincoteague. Campground Details: Assateague State ParkĪssateague State Park is on an island that’s basically a spit of sand running north to south just below Ocean City, Maryland. In fact, we can’t believe it took us so long to bring the boys to one of best campgrounds on the east coast that’s just a few hours from our home. We’ve been camping there for decades independently and together as a couple.īut we finally returned with our kids just this past September, and confirmed that it is just as magical as ever. Our attachment to Assateague State Park is rooted in sentimentality. It’s also one of our very favorite campgrounds in the country. Also bring bungee cords for the cooler, we were informed that the horses can and will open he coolers and enter tents to get to the food so we used bungee cords purchased locally to keep our cooler closed and tethered it to the picnic bench.Assateague State Park is Maryland’s only oceanfront State Park, located south of Ocean City and north of Chincoteague Island. We had to make multiple trips of about 1/5 mile carrying everything so a small cart with wheels suitable for sand are a good idea. The beach is very close to the water so it is a short walk during the day but be prepared to walk a bit with your bags to the site. Make sure to look closely when picking your site we had a site right up front closest to the water but there were multiple plots behind us in the bushes were all of the biting insects were. The bathrooms are portapotties so be prepared for that if the need to use the facility arises the bathrooms were clean but there is no running water so the smell wasn't the greatest and they aren't close to all of the sites so be prepared to walk late at night. Make sure to bring something to cook with and some way to start a fire, firewood can be bought anywhere near the site as the requirement is that the wood is from the state of Maryland we incorrectly took the website to mean only wood purchased on site was available and there are many places to get a bag of wood for $5. We used deet bug spray and lotion and the bugs seemed to take it as a challenge continuing to land and bite even after applying the spray. We expected a lot of bugs but walking to the campsites from the parking lot we got eaten alive time and time again. The amount of mosquitos and horse flies was insane. ![]() As should be expected by an island full of wild horses their was horse poop everywhere but that wasn't the problem. At night the sky is quite a sight to see we laid in our tent watching stars for hours. The beach was nice and the sand is super soft. Both of these things were a nice addition as we had brought a small propane grill as a back up but did not need it. The site comes with a picnic bench and a fire put with a grill attached to it. The campsites are a good size, we had 2 6 person tents and a pop up canopy and still had plenty of room. We camped on Assateague island and it was beautiful. Overall, I would come back again, but no more camping for me. But, the bugs situation is so awful that it really depletes the fun. Oh well, I really want to like Assateague because the beach is gorgeous, water temperature is just right (~80F), and it is great for light surfing activities. BTW, I came back the next day and drove to the bay area in the early morning, and the biting flies situation is 10 times worse there than the oceanside. That is when I made a decision to ditch camping and went to a hotel at Ocean City instead. I went back to my camp site around 5pm (it is mid-august, so it was no where near dusk), then I continue to get bitten by flies, not misquitos. Those biting flies are immune to the bug spray I think. But the problem is that whenever I saw down in my beach tent, I immediately got bitten, despite I got the deet bug spray on me. Once I set up my beach tent, then I immediately got visitors, those tiny flies that bite!! It really hurts! So I made a beeline to the water, and the water is reallly refreshing and great waves for boogie board. The location is great and I don't need to haul all my camp and beach stuff for a long walk. So this time I booked the drive-in oceanside campground (site 32). I blamed it on the nearby vegetation and wet meadow. Few years back I was attacked by an army of misquitos at the walk-in oceanside camp ground (site 71).
